MTW Expands Response to Typhoon Haiyan

MTW Expands Response to Typhoon Haiyan

Following a successful relief effort in Bogo, Cebu, Philippines, by the initial Global Disaster Response (GDR) team, MTW’s response to the Super Typhoon Haiyan is moving into the next phase—expanding relief efforts to Tacloban, the area hardest hit by the typhoon. An assessment team recently returned from Tacloban where they were able to explore new avenues for relief ministry.

Hundreds of generous donors have given nearly $500,000 so far to MTW relief efforts in the Philippines, and more continues to come in. As a result MTW’s response can continue for months to come. MTW plans to partner with Filipino pastor Zuriel Bernardino, who is planting a Reformed church in a strategic area of Manila as a part of Redeemer’s City to City ministry and is reaching out to Tacloban, the area hardest hit by the typhoon. Visit for ongoing updates as specific details become available concerning future efforts in Tacloban.

Meeting Tangible Needs in Bogo
A portion of the relief donations are helping a community in Bogo, Cebu. When the initial MTW Global Disaster Response team traveled to Bogo in December, they helped to repair Bogo Presybterian Church and made an impact on surrounding community. The team worked on rebuilding church’s roof, awning, and attached pastor’s quarters. Over the course of 10 days, the team helped not only with church reconstruction, but also with reconstruction in the community where many homes were decimated. The medical contingent conducted clinics, providing both physical and psychological care to victims, who were grateful for the opportunity to finally talk about their experiences.

Endless Reconstruction Needs
In Cebu and in Tacloban reconstruction needs are endless. Devastation was at a colossal level, but not equally or evenly distributed. Many structures no longer exist and others need significant repair, while others need limited supplies and materials to return to a pre-typhoon state. Please be in prayer for MTW’s Global Disaster Response Department as decisions are made regarding ongoing relief efforts in the Philippines.

MTW is still accepting donations for the ongoing relief efforts. To make a donation, visit Consider becoming a part of a disaster response team. Register now for MTW’s Global Disaster Response Training April 29-May 4, 2014 in Pittsburgh, Penn., at
